Which Essex County school saw the biggest in 2023-24 school year?

Tappahannock Elementary School had the highest enrollment among Essex County schools, welcoming 422 students during the 2023-24 school year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed at the time, 52.1% of them were male, and 47.9% were female.

Data also showed that most of the students were Black, representing 51.9% of Tappahannock Elementary School's total enrollment.

Among the three schools in Essex County, Essex High School ranked second in enrollment numbers with 410 students, while James H. Cary Intermediate School welcomed 331 students to be ranked third in the 2023-24 school year.

Tappahannock Elementary School is part of Essex County Public Schools District, which roughly covers schools within Essex County, with its main office in Tappahannock.

In the previous school year, Essex High School had the highest number of students among Essex County schools.

According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools saw an average student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:14 in the 2023-24 school year, which is better than the national average of 1:15 in public schools.
