Mathews High School and Mathews Elementary School tied for highest enrollment in Mathews County in 2023-24 school year

There was a tie for the largest school in Mathews County during 2023-24 school year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

Both Mathews High School and Mathews Elementary School welcomed 298 students that year to have the highest enrollment numbers in the county.

Enrollment at Mathews High School was down 6.3% than the year before, while the number of students at Mathews Elementary School fell by 3.9% compared to the year before.

Between the two schools, 56% were male and 43.8% were female.

Students at these schools were predominantle white, representing 80.2% of the student body. Black was the second most represented ethnicity in the schools in the 2023-24 school year.

According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools saw an average student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:14 in the 2023-24 school year, which is better than the national average of 1:15 in public schools.
