Fewer students enrolled in Mathews County's only school district in 2023-24 school year

The only school district in Mathews County suffered declining enrollment in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

There were 841 students in Mathews County Public Schools District, 7.7% less than the year before.

Enrollment in Mathews County was steady with the state's trend of decreasing enrollment.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2023-24 school year, 52.2% of them were male, and 47.7% were female.

Data also showed that most of the studets were white, representing 79.4% of Mathews County Public Schools District's total enrollment.

Mathews County Public Schools District has a main office in Mathews and is the only school district within Mathews County.

According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools saw an average student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:14 in the 2023-24 school year, which is better than the national average of 1:15 in public schools.
