1,163 students enrolled in Essex County schools in 2023-24 school year

There were 1,163 students enrolled in Essex County schools in the 2023-24 school year, 0.6% more than the previous year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

In terms of gender distribution, the student body in Essex County comprised 52.5% boys, with girls representing the remaining 47.5%.

Data also showed that Black or African American students made up 54.8% of the student body, the largest percentage in Essex County schools, followed by white students with 26.8%, 5.3% Hispanic students and 1.5% Asian students.

Tappahannock Elementary School had the highest enrollment among Essex County's three schools in the 2023-24 school year, welcoming 422 students.

According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools have an average student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, slightly better than the national average of 15:1. Minority students, primarily Hispanic and Black, make up 54% of the enrollment, while white students constitute 46%.
