2023-24 School Year Enrollment: 72 1st-grade students welcomed in Essex County schools

There were 72 1st-grade students enrolled in Essex County schools in the 2023-24 school year, 1.4% fewer than the previous year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

Tappahannock Elementary School was the only school that welcomed 1st-grade students in the county.

Within Essex County schools, the largest number of students were found in 10th-grade, while pre-kindergarten had the least students.

Statewide, Essex County ranked 115th in enrollment numbers. It was ranked 116th the year before.

As of November 2023, according to Public Schools Review, Virginia public schools saw an average student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:14, which is better than the national average of 1:15 in public schools nationwide.
