Census Bureau: 3.7% of people in Essex County identified as multiracial in 2021

Of the 10,621 citizens living in Essex County in 2021, 96.3% said they were only one race, while 3.7% said they were two or more races, according to U.S. Census Bureau data obtained in June.

The most prevalent racial group among citizens in Essex County who reported being of a single race in 2021 was white, comprising 55.7% or 5,917 individuals. Following them, African American accounted for 38.2% and totaled 4,053 individuals.

The percentage of multiracial residents in Essex County is 2.2% lower than the state average, which stands at 5.9%.
