The Virginia Symphony Orchestra will play a free concert on Thursday, Sept. 1 at William & Mary’s Martha Wren Briggs Amphitheatre at Lake Matoaka.
Gates open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Although admission is free, a wristband is required for admittance. They will be available at the ticket booth area beginning at 6 p.m. the day of the concert. The wristbands will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Beach chairs and blankets are welcome as long as they don’t block the view of other guests. Guests are also invited to bring personal coolers and picnic baskets; however, glass bottles and external alcoholic beverages are not permitted. All bags and coolers will be inspected prior to entry. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase inside the venue.
General parking will be available at William & Mary’s parking deck, which is located at 201 Ukrop Way, until it reaches capacity. Larger vehicles should park at Kaplan Arena, where overflow parking will be available. Handicap parking spaces are available in the Boswell Hall (formerly Morton Hall) parking lot, and golf carts will provide transportation to the venue for guests with limited mobility.
Because parking spaces are expected to open at the end of the workday, visitors to campus are encouraged to wait until after 5:30 p.m. to seek parking.
The event, part of the VSO’s “Symphony Under the Stars” series, will feature a variety of popular pieces from popular movies, ranging from “Star Wars” to The Wizard of Oz.” The concert is presented by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, William & Mary, the W&M Student Assembly and the City of Williamsburg.
Several W&M music faculty members perform as part of the VSO. They include: David Vonderheide, VSO principal trumpet, W&M instructor of trumpet; Sherie Aguirre, principal oboe, instructor of oboe; Laura Leisring, principal bassoon, instructor of bassoon; Michael Byerly, principal clarinet, instructor of clarinet; and Joanne White, second flute, instructor of flute.
