City of Alexandria Seeking Community Feedback on Safety Improvements on Mount Vernon Avenue North

19

The City of Alexandria is seeking community feedback on intersection safety improvements on Mount Vernon Avenue between West Glebe Road and Four Mile Run Road as part of the Mount Vernon Avenue North Complete Streets Project. The purpose of this project is to make it easier and safer for people to get to home, work, school, bus stops, parks, shops, and other destinations in and around Arlandria.

There are two ways to provide feedback:

Online: May 11 - June 5

    1. View the project presentation.
    1. Submit your comments in the online feedback form. Comments are due by Sunday, June 5.
In Person: Thursday, May 19

An open house will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 at Chick Armstrong Recreation Center. Residents may attend to learn more about the project and provide feedback on potential roadway improvements.

The City has received public comments through multiple community engagement efforts over the last five years, including the 2021 Arlandria-Chirilagua Small Area Plan. Neighbors have voiced concern about issues such as speeding traffic, confusing intersections, and difficulty crossing the street. These comments were considered as safety improvements were developed, and now the City wants to hear from the community about design options.

There have been multiple fatal and injury crashes on this corridor. The City’s adopted Vision Zero Policy and Action Plan sets a goal of eliminating fatal and severe crashes, and the primary goal of this project is to improve traffic safety.
