City of Alexandria issued the following announcement on Dec. 17
Alexandria is experiencing a surge of COVID-19 infections, with the highest number of new cases in a single day since January. Cases have been increasing over the past few weeks following a post-Thanksgiving surge. Individual actions now can make the difference between a continued increase in cases or a slowdown in spread. The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) strongly urges all community members to take practical safety precautions immediately.
Based on a recent AHD analysis of November cases, unvaccinated people are 4 times more likely to get COVID-19, and 5 times more likely to be hospitalized compared to fully vaccinated people. However, with the significantly increased transmission rates, there is also a rise in cases among those who are fully vaccinated. Increases in hospitalizations and deaths typically lag a few weeks behind increases in cases and AHD is closely monitoring local hospital capacity and the use of ventilators. Many of the people experiencing new COVID-19 cases over the past month had participated in social gatherings with friends and family, travelled, or were infected by a household member. During this holiday season, reduce the risk in your gatherings. Consider moving your celebration virtual or limiting the different groups of people you’ll be spending time with in-person. Consider using a rapid home test for everyone before gathering. Avoid travel if possible. If travel is unavoidable, get tested before and after. Fully vaccinated individuals ages 16 and older should get a booster shot to increase protection against infections.
The rapid increase in new cases requires AHD case investigation and contact tracing staff to shift protocols. Prior to the surge, AHD staff would make multiple contact attempts when someone has a positive test result or is a close contact. Currently, staff will only make one phone call with a voicemail and send one text message. Residents are strongly urged to answer calls from AHD or to return them for guidance on next steps. Those who are positive should also begin calling their potential close contacts to let them know they may have been exposed and to get tested as soon as possible, regardless of vaccination status.
Those sick with or exposed to COVID-19 who are at high risk of severe disease—such as older adults, pregnant people and those with underlying medical conditions—should consult their healthcare provider about whether an FDA approved or authorized treatment can reduce their risk of hospitalization or death.
