New Kent County has launched a study to develop recommendations for streetscape improvements in the Eltham and Providence Forge areas. The goal of the project is to enhance both the visual appeal and functional aspects of local streets, making them safer and more accessible for all users. Planned improvements may include upgrades such as pedestrian accommodations, better lighting, landscaping, and improved access to business entrances.
Two public meetings are scheduled where community members can share their input on desired amenities for the streetscape project. Attendees will have an opportunity to discuss which features they would like to see included in future development plans.
The initiative comes at a time when New Kent County Public Schools District continues to serve a growing student population, with 3,536 students enrolled during the 2023-24 school year, reflecting a 2.9% increase from the previous year’s total of 3,436 students (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). New Kent High School had the highest enrollment among county schools with 1,116 students (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Demographically, white students made up 73.1% of enrollment while Black students accounted for 11.7% (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
The county’s focus on improving public spaces through projects like this reflects ongoing efforts to support its residents and adapt infrastructure as community needs evolve.
