A Boil Water Advisory has been issued for specific areas within the Five Lakes subdivision in Bottoms Bridge, New Kent County. The advisory was announced by the County of New Kent Department of Public Utilities in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Health. It affects residents on Cary Rd, Eagle Point Dr, Fairway Ridge Dr, Greenway Circle, Hilton Dr, Horseshoe Ct, Horseshoe Dr, Longview Dr, Pinehurst Dr, Pointe Dr, N Hairpin Dr, S Hairpin Dr, N Woodland Cir, S Woodland Cir and Teakwood Dr.
The advisory does not impact Quinton Elementary School or businesses and restaurants located on Pocahontas Trail/Route 60 and New Kent Highway/Route 249. Customers using Aqua Virginia water are also not affected. According to state data from the 2023-24 school year, Quinton Elementary School enrolled the largest number of pre-kindergarten students among schools in New Kent County (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
The advisory follows a water main break that occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19. As a result of this incident, some customers may have lost water service entirely while others could experience reduced pressure. Officials encourage impacted residents to conserve water and boil it before use for drinking or food preparation.
“The list of impacted residents may also expand as water usage continues; residents in all area of the Five Lakes neighborhood are encouraged to conserve water and to stay up-to-date at newkent-va.us or on New Kent County’s social media pages,” according to county officials.
County staff are working closely with the Virginia Health Department to monitor and address the situation. Once normal water pressure is restored in affected areas, utility personnel will flush the system before lifting the advisory.
Residents are advised not to drink tap water during this period or use it for making ice or preparing food unless it has been boiled vigorously for three minutes. Other precautions include avoiding washing dishes with tap water unless boiled first and postponing laundry when possible.
“PLEASE NOTE: water filters and softeners do not alleviate the need to boil water.”
