City of Alexandria issued the following announcement on Nov. 3

The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the eight inaugural vacancies on the City’s Independent Community Policing Review Board, which was established in July. The purpose of this Board is to enhance policing legitimacy and to increase and maintain trust between and among the Alexandria Police Department, City Council, City Manager and the public.

The seven voting members of the Board must be City of Alexandria residents, and shall  demonstrate fairness, integrity and objectivity. Board members will be chosen based on expertise and personal experience (including lived experience) relevant to the performance of the Board’s duties.

All applicants must review the Call for Applications and complete an online Personal Data Record form via the City’s website at alexandriava.gov/Boards using the “Apply” button located beneath the Boards and Commissions search bar). The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Friday, November 12.

The following vacancies are available:

  • Three members from historically racially or socially marginalized communities who have commonly experienced disparate policing, either in Alexandria or in the Commonwealth of Virginia, who will initially serve an 18-month term.
  • One member who represents an organization, office or agency that either seeks racial or social justice or that otherwise advocates on behalf of historically, racially, or socially marginalized communities (particularly communities that may have experienced disparate policing), who will serve a three-year term.
  • Three at-large members, who will serve a three-year term.
  • One nonvoting, ex-officio member, with past experiences in law enforcement, who will serve a three-year term. This member shall not have been previously employed as a law enforcement officer within the City of Alexandria; shall not be a current employee of or an immediate family member of a current employee of a law enforcement agency and shall be at least three years honorably removed from service.

A City Council-appointed Independent Policing Auditor/Investigator will also staff the review Board.
